THE MELANCHOLIC

melancholija is a type of soul. The word is Lithuanian. The temperament is 2,000 years old — melancholic maps to Saturn: form, discipline, the slowly ripening tree. It sees what others set down. It cannot look away.

The room changes before the canvas does. Incense until the air holds weight. Music that moves beneath everything. In that stillness the figure arrives before the brush does — already composed, already elsewhere. The painting is the work of catching her at exactly that moment.
